Mind and brain are not identical

I continue to refer to the article by Greyson:

Individuals who have had nde’s are “convinced that during the nde they temporarily separated from their physical bodies.” greyson points out that “the idea that mind and brain are not identical is not inherently unscientific. . . . although most psychologists and neuroscientists accept the reductionistic model that brain produces mind, or indeed is the mind, several features of nde’s call into question whether materialist reductionism will ever provide a full explanation of them.”

Near Death Experiences and postmaterialist psychology

bruce greyson of the university of virginia has published an article entitled, “implications of near-death experiences for a postmaterialist psychlogy,” psychology of religion and spirituality, 2010, vol. 2, no. 1, 37-45. the author stated that materialist psychology has “proved insufficient for describing mentation under extreme conditions, such as the continuation of mental function when the brain is inactive or impaired, such AS OCCURS NEAR DEATH.” HE NOTES THAT “ENHANCED MENTATION AND MEMORY . . . ACCURATE PERCEPTIONS FROM A PERSPECTIVE OUTSIDE THE BODY, AND . . . VISIONS OF DECEASED PERSONS, INCLUDING THOSE NOT KNOWN TO BE DECEASED” CANNOT BE EXPLAINED BY MATERIALISt REDUCTIONISM and its mind-brain identity model.

greyson lists the features common to near death experiences (nde) and notes that “mental clarity, vivid sensory imagery, a clear memory of the experience, and a conviction that the experience seemed more real than ordinary consciousness are the norm for nde’s.” his article suggests that memory exists in the immaterial mind beyond those archived in the codes of neural synaptic networks. in cardiac arrest “neuronal action-potentials, the ultimate physical basis for coordination of neural activity between widely separated brain regions, are rapidly abolished . . . [and] cells in the hippocampus, the region thought to be essential for memory formation, are especially vulnerable to the effects of anoxia.” he states that it is not credible that nde’s “can be accounted for in terms of some hypothetical residual capacity of the brain to process and store complex information under those conditions. . . . a substantial number of nde’s contain apparent time ‘anchors’ in the form of verifiable reports of events occuring during the period of insult itself.”

my next blog will continue to feature greyson’s observations. we must remember that god, who is spirit, has a cognitive mind in whose image the mind of man has been created. i have discussed the dual interaction that is being substantiated between the immaterial mind of man (and of god) and the material neural synaptic components of the human brain. could nde’s be extending revelations of god’s creations in our time? Is memory both immaterially and materially based? we press on.

Is the mind dependent on neural codes of synaptic networks

in my books and blog posts i have provided what i hope is a compelling explanation for a causal INTERACTIVE relationship between the immaterial mind and the material components of the neural synaptic networks of the brain. The learned capacity to interpret LINGUISTICALLY the frequency, amplitude and shape of neural codes transmitted through coherent synaptic pathways has been discussed. we have aN INCREASING understanding of how the mind’s intent can result in the lifting of an arm, a spoken phrase, A CREATIVE IDEA and the recall of memories from within neural networks.

near death experiences (nde) have been addressed in previous posts that raise a valid question of whether the immaterial mind CAN continue to function in the absence of THE BRAIN’S neural network codes in the face of documented death. in the next series of blogs i shall address this challenging question, ABOUT WHICH MORE AND MORE EVIDENCE IS BEING GATHERED. IS THIS A CHALLENGE TO DUALIST INTERACTION?

Relational Christianity

Pinkham, Wesley M. and Gruenberg, Jeremiah, Relational Christianity: A Remarkable Vision of God, Wipf & Stock, Eugene, Oregon, 2022

God created Man to have a personal communion with Him, a dual, bidirectional interaction between the Mind of God and the mind of Man.  The Creator God is triune, comprised of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  It is a tripartite communion based in Love.  God created mankind with spirit, soul and body, and love was to guide mankind’s interrelationships as well as with the Creator.  But the relationship was lost in sin, so that Man lost an indwelling communion with the Spirit of God, manifesting thereby a spiritual death.  By the grace and love of God through His sinless Son, Jesus Christ, Jesus became a sin sacrifice for all mankind for all time.  By his resurrection through the power of the Holy Spirit victory over spiritual death was provided to those who repented and accepted the Truth of the Gospel in faith.  The Spirit of God was sent to believers through the resurrected Son who lives at the right hand of the Father.  What then is the nature of the restored relationship between the triune God and believers?  Doctors Pinkham and Gruenberg eloquently address this question in their book, Relational Christianity: A Remarkable Vision of God.

As Love defines the triunity of God, so also is the relationship intended between God and believers and between believers in the church.  The authors characterize this relationship as holistic, consisting of an interpersonal Oneness between the triune God and believers.  It is a relational Oneness that gives believers identity as Sons of God and the Father as abba. It is a “kenotic” relationship exhibited by the life and ministry of Jesus who emptied himself, revealing the Trinitarian priority of Oneness over individualism.  Likewise, believers should emulate Jesus’ Oneness with the Father and the Holy Spirit, having the Spirit as an indwelling sent as Jesus promised at Pentecost.  Believers are to live a servanthood lifestyle in the name of Jesus Christ.  As Jesus fully depended upon the Father during his life and ministry on Earth, so also are believers to depend upon the indwelling Holy Spirit as their Counselor and Helper, a relationship for all members of the church.

The authors decried the reality that much teaching in the church today is binitarian rather than trinitarian.  The Holy Spirit is neglected though fundamental to Christian orthodoxy.  Drs. Pinkham and Gruenberg successfully explain how the “kenotic” relationship should be nurtured in the church, so that God’s Holy Spirit indwells believers and governs their lives as was the life of Jesus Christ during his ministry on Earth.

Thanks to advances in the technology of the neurosciences we are beginning to understand the reality and mechanism of the personal interaction between the Mind of God and the mind of Man.  It is a causal interaction between the immaterial Mind of God and mind of Man through the material synaptic networks of the human brain.  God does commune with Man in our time in fulfillment of His plan since the creation of Adam, a communion lost at the Fall but restored by the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ for all mankind.

I heartily recommend this book.  It is a must read for Christian believers so that the relationship with our triune Creator and Lord is fulfilled.

Life through the Spirit

i draw the reader’s attention to romans 8:1-17 which speaks to the comments i shared in my last blog post about our direct access to the “most holy place” made possible by the sin sacrifice of the living jesus christ.

for what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, god did by sending his own son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. and so he condemned sin in sinful man, in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the [holy] spirit.

you, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the spirit, if the spirit of god lives in you. and if anyone does not have the spirit of christ, he does not belong to christ. but if christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin,yet your [human] spirit is alive because of righteousness. and if the spirit of him who raised jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his spirit, who lives in you. (romans 8;3-4: 9-11)

we have direct communion with the holy spirit, sent by jesus from the father at pentecost and on to the present day. it is a dual interaction made possible by god’s created neural synaptic networks which i trust have been compellingly explained in my writings.

The Most Holy Place

At jesus’ death on the cross as aN ATONING sin sacrifice the curtain of the temple wAS TORN IN TWO (luke 23:45). IT WAS LOCATED BETWEEN THE HOLY PLACE AND THE MOST HOLY PLACE. ITS TEARING SYMBOLIZED cHRIST’S OPENING THE WAY DIRECTLY TO GOD FOR ALL PEOPLE. THE MOST HOLY PLACE IS IN THE PRESENCE OF THE PERSONAL GOD. HISTORICally, the levitical priest stood and performed his religious duties, offering sacrifices which could never take away sins. “but when [Jesus] had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of god. since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool, becAUSE BY ONE SACRIFICE HE HAS MADE PERFECT FOREVER THOSE WHO ARE BEING MADE HOLY. THE HOLY SPIRIT ALSO TESTIFIES TO US ABOUT THIS. FIRST HE SAYS: THIS IS THE COVENANT I WILL MAKE WITH THEM AFTER THAT TIME, SAYS THE LORD. I WILL PUT MY LAWS IN THEIR HEARTS, AND I WILL WRITE THEM ON THEIR MINDS. THEN HE ADDS: THEIR SINS AND LAWLESS ACTS I WILL REMEMBER NO MORE.” (HEBREWS 10:12-17)

IT IS MY PRAYER THAT THE INFORMATION I HAVE SHARED IN MY BOOKS AND BLOG POSTS PROVIDES COMPELLING EVIDENCE FOR THE PERSONAL COMMUNION AVAILABLE BETWEEN THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE HUMAN SPIRIT AND SOUL IN OUR TIME. WE UNDERSTAND BETTER HOW THIS DUALIST INTERACTION TAKES PLACE INVOLVING THE NEURAL SYNAPTIC NETWORKS OF THE BRAIN. IT IS BIDIRECTIONAL, GIVING REPENTANT PEOPLE ACCESS TO THE MOST HOLY PLACE IN FAITH.

Waves, The "Causal Glue" for Information

In my books and blog posts I have presented compelling evidence for dualist interaction between the immaterial mind, including the Mind of God in whose image the human mind was created, and the material components of the neural synaptic networks of the brain.  Wave forms carrying encoded information within their amplitudes, frequencies and shapes are generated by a mind and transmitted across neural synapses and through synchronous neural networks to bring about intended actions.  The mind of humans learns to interpret the neural codes beginning at birth, and probably prior to birth, and interpretations are archived in memory with its own wave functions.  Dualist interaction involves causality between a mind/Mind and the neural networks so that motor, sensory and cognitive activities result.  The waves of interest are nonmaterial and are coordinated with electrochemical action potentials that interact with molecular components in neural ionic channels and synaptic vesicular structures via quantum tunneling.  The details of this complex process have been addressed in my writings, referencing some of the latest findings in the neurosciences.

But is the mind of humans dependent solely upon neural mechanics?  I have discussed near death and out of body experiences which involve the recall of items, individuals, activities and communications during times when patients are officially declared dead for variable lengths of time.  In these instances, it is not possible for the brain to establish neural memory codes!  Nevertheless, in revived patients, situations observed and communications received were specifically recalled.  So, does the immaterial mind itself have the capacity to establish and retain memory codes?  God, who is Spirit, has a Mind with the capacity for transmitting images (visions, dreams), verbal communications, physical outcomes and memories, so it is reasonable to presume that the human mind also has such capacities.  And the next question is what role nonmaterial wave forms play?  Do the items, communications, individuals and activities experienced during NDE emit and transmit specified information having meaning within the energy of nonmaterial wave forms that are received and interpreted by the immaterial mind of humans?

I refer you to my March 1, 2024 blog post in which I cited Dr. Dembski, “WHO STATED THAT INFORMATION IS DYNAMIC, PASSING IN, THROUGH AND OUT OF [BOLD TYPE ADDED] MATTER, WHICH ITSELF CAN BE REDUCED TO INFORMATION THAT IS INSTANTIATED WITHIN IT. HE STATED THAT “ANYTHING THAT EXHIBITS INFORMATION NEEDED AT SOME POINT TO BE IMPARTED WITH INFORMATION.  WHAT CAUSES INFORMATION TO UNDERGO SUCH DYNAMIC TRANSFORMATIONS? . . . ENERGY.” ENERGY IS ALWAYS INFERRED FROM INFORMATION, ACCORDING TO DEMBSKI.  ENERGY IS THE “CAUSAL GLUE” THAT CONNECTS ITEMS OF INFORMATION IN AN INFORMATIONAL UNIVERSE.

I ASKED IN MY BOOK IF IT IS REASONABLE THAT A TRANSMISSION OF INFORMATION WOULD HAVE NO MATERIAL BASIS?  DEMBSKI STATED THAT MATERIAL ENERGY IS A FORM OF ENERGY “BUT NOT . . . COEXTENSIVE WITH THE WHOLE OF ENERGY.” DEMBSKI POINTED OUT THAT DESPITE THE ABSENCE OF AN INTERVENING PHYSICAL PROCESS AS MEDIUM, INFORMATION RELATIONSHIPS CAN STILL HOLD.  ARE THERE INFORMATION TRANSFERS THAT TRANSCEND MATERIAL MEDIA THROUGH A NONMATERIAL FORM OF ENERGY?  DEMBSKI CITED NDE AS AN EXAMPLE OF INFORMATION TRANSFERS INDUCED BY NONMATERIAL ENERGY.  IN A NUMBER OF CASES REPORTS OF EXPERIENCES OF PATIENTS HAVING NDE HAVE BEEN VERIFIED AND COULD NOT HAVE BEEN GUESSED.  SUCH EXPERIENCES CONFIRM THAT INFORMATION CAN TRANSFER FROM EVENT, ITEM OR SCENE TO A PATIENT WHILE CLINICALLY DEAD AND IN A LOCATION THAT ON MATERIALISTIC GROUNDS WOULD HAVE BEEN IMPOSSIBLE FOR THE PATIENT TO ACCESS THE INFORMATION.

SO, WHAT DOES NONMATERIAL/NON-MECHANICAL ENERGY LOOK LIKE?  A SHORT ARTICLE AT STUDY.COM (HTTPS://HOMEWORK.STUDY.COM/EXPLANATION/WHAT-IS-) ADDRESSES THE QUESTION, WHAT IS A NON-MECHANICAL WAVE?  I QUOTE FROM THE ARTICLE, “A NON-MECHANICAL WAVE IS ANY ENERGY WAVE THAT CAN MOVE THROUGH A VACUUM, MEANING IT IS NOT LIMITED TO ONLY MOVING THROUGH PHYSICAL MATTER IN THE WAY THAT MECHANICAL WAVES ARE LIMITED.  UNTIL ONLY A FEW DECADES AGO, THE ONLY KNOWN TYPE OF NON-MECHANICAL WAVE WAS AN ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE.  THESE ARE WAVES OF ELECTROMAGNETIC ENERGY KNOWN AS LIGHT, RADIO WAVES, X-RAYS, AND MICROWAVES.  MORE RECENTLY, ASTROPHYSICISTS PROVIDED THE EXISTENCE OF GRAVITATIONAL WAVES, WHICH CAN ALSO MOVE THROUGH A VACUUM.”

IT IS MY HYPOTHESIS, RECORDED IN MY BOOKS AND NOW EXTENDED, THAT ENCODED NONMATERIAL WAVE FORMS CONSTITUTE THAT ENERGY TRANSMITTED FROM THE INSTANTIATED INFORMATION OF THE OBSERVED SCENE, ITEM OR EVENT TO THE IMMATERIAL, DISEMBODIED MIND OF AN INDIVIDUAL EXPERIENCING A NDE, A MIND THAT CAN INTERPRET THE ENCODED WAVE FORMS TRANSMITTED FROM THAT WHICH IS PERCEIVED DURING THE EPISODE.  PATIENTS WHO RECOVER FROM NDE POSSIBLY TRANSMIT THE INFORMATION IN THE ENCODED WAVE FORMS TO NEURAL CODES OF SYNAPTIC NETWORKS, ENABLING THE DESCRIPTION OF THAT WHICH WAS SEEN AND EXPERIENCED IN THE NDE.

ARE THE WAVE FORMS THAT ENABLE THE RECALL OF NDE PATIENTS RESTRICTED TO OUR FOUR SPACETIME DIMENSIONS?  IF NDE HAPPEN BEYOND THESE DIMENSIONS, DOES THIS PROCESS APPLY?  MY RESEARCH HAS NOT ADDRESSED SUCH AS THESE QUESTIONS.  THERE IS SO MUCH MORE TO LEARN ABOUT THE COMMUNION GOD INTENDED TO HAVE WITH MANKIND!

Energy and wave forms

i have reviewed the many blogs on my website and am listing a large number by their date of posting that speak directly or indirectly to the points made about near death experiences in the last several blog posts. this list provides evidence that strengthens my hypothesis, extended to address the transmission of specified information via the energy of wave forms in near death experiences:

Energy is the causal glue

in my book, nerve endings of the soul, i cited Dr. Dembski who stated that information is dynamic, passing in, through and out of matter, which itself can be reduced to information that is instantiated within it. he stated that “anything that exhibits information needed at some point to be imparted with information. what causes information to undergo such dynamic transformations? . . . energy.” energy is always inferred from information, according to dembski. energy is the “causal glue” that connects items of information in an informational universe.

I asked in my book if it is reasonable that a transmission of information would have no material basis? dembski stated that material energy is a form of energy “but not . . . coextensive with the whole of energy.” so what would nonmaterial energy look like? when information is transmitted an information relationship exists between two ends of a communication channel. dembski pointed out that despite the absence of an intervening physical process as medium, information relationships can still hold. are there information transfers that transcend material media through a nonmaterial form of energy? dembski cited nde as an example of information transfers induced by nonmaterial energy. in selected cases reports of experiences of patients having nde have been verified and could not have been guessed. such experiences confirm that information can transfer from event, item or scene to a patient while unconscious and clinically dead and in a location that on materialistic grounds would have been impossible for the patient to access the information.

it is my hypothesis, recorded in my books, that encoded nonmaterial wave forms constitute that energy transmitted from the instantiated information of the observed scene, item or event to the immaterial, disembodied mind of an individual experiencing a nde, a mind that can interpret the encoded wave forms transmitted to the mind from that which is perceived during the episode. i refer the reader to my more recent blog posts in which this topic is addressed. in my next blog they shall be posted.

Information and the mind-body relationship

dr. michael egnor interviewed dr. william dembski about the role of information in the mind-body relationship (https://www.discovery.org/podcast/william-dembski-on-information-and-the-mind-body-relationship/). dembski expained that “information is a verb [which has action], representing the narrowing of possibilities and the constraining of contingency.” Information relates to meaning and communication and “is the most fundamental aspect of reality.” he argued that “information is more real than matter and that even material entities disclose themselves informationally.” dembski argued further “that if information is considered fundamental rather than matter, it dissolves the mind-body problem.” he stated further “the idea of information as a fundamental concept in the natural world, analogous to energy." (https://www.discovery.org/podcast/william-dembski-on-information-and-the-mind-body-relationship/)

in my book, nerve endings of the soul: interaction between the mind of god and the mind of man through neural synaptic networks, i discussed the transmission of information by a proposed nonmaterial energy. i commented on the codification of transmitted information and the relationship between information and energy. I proposed that wave forms represent an immaterial energy that transmits encoded information to a recipient mind having meaning, purpose and structure that is interpreted by the immaterial mind. in my next blog post i shall address the relationship between information and energy and how it could explain the recall of scenes and items seen by one who has a nde.
